Mikhail Gorbachev believes USA acts like modern-day empire

The first and the last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, is deeply concerned about the excessive presence of the defense factor in modern-day politics and thinking. Gorbachev is particularly concerned about the United States, because its foreign and home polices target not only American citizens alone.

Mikhail Gorbachev believes that the USA needs to fully decline its nuclear weapons to exclude disbalance on the international arena.

“Even USA’s internal problems have stopped being purely internal problems. I am talking about the economy, first and foremost. It is possible to solve the problem of the huge US budget deficit with the help of a conveyor printing green notes nonstop. However, it can be possible just for a while. This mechanism can not work endlessly,” Mikhail Gorbachev wrote in an article published in the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper.

Gorbachev believes that the USA conducts its foreign policy to exaggerate its role in the world, particularly in the field of anti-terrorist struggle and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

“It was typical for the current administration, especially during George W. Bush’s first presidency, to solve all these problems mainly with the use of military means, threats and pressure. Will US presidential candidates find an alternative approach to these serious problems? This is the most important question today,” Gorbachev believes.

"I am deeply concerned over increasingly visible signs of the militarization of politics and thinking in the modern world. They want to get people accustomed to the fact that almost any problem can be solved in a very simple way – with the use of the military force, even though the military route again and again leads to a dead-end," the former Soviet president wrote.

Mikhail Gorbachev thinks that it is enough to look back at the examples of North Korea and Iran.

“Having spent several years on bellicose rhetoric, the US administration started serious talks with North Korea with the participation of South Korea and other countries of the region. The result followed soon afterwards, albeit not at once: they started to close the North Korean nuclear program. Of course, the Iranian problem has its own specific character. Maybe, it is even more difficult. However, it cannot be solved with threats and phantom hopes for a regime change,” Gorbachev wrote.

Mikhail Gorbachev believes that the world’s superpowers, Russia and the USA, need to reduce their nuclear potentials.

“Let us imagine that the world will get rid of nuclear weapons in 10 or 15 years. What will be left? Piles of conventional weapons, latest types of them, the power of which would be comparable to that of WMDs. A lion’s share of them will be owned by one country, the USA, which will thus obtain the overwhelming predominance in the world,” Gorbachev believes.

“Nowadays the USA makes a half of world’s defense products. The country has over 700 army bases spreading from Europe to most remote corners of the world. Those are only officially recognized bases. It seems that the Cold War has never been a matter of the past. It seems that the USA is surrounded by enemies, against which the country can struggle with the use of tanks, missiles and planes. Only empires used to interpret their security like that,” Gorbachev said.

Russia, Belarus denounce attempts to revise WWII results

BREST, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Belarus denounce any attempts to revise the results of World War Two, a joint declaration by the presidents of both countries said on Sunday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko signed on June 22 a declaration aimed at strengthening collective security and developing bilateral relations. Both presidents met on the Day of Memory and Grief, the day when the Great Patriotic War between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany began in 1941.

Some European states are currently questioning the results of World War II, treating participants in Nazi Legion formations and nationalist rebel forces during wartime as war veterans.

"A selective politicized approach must be set off against honest scholar debates. It is only on this basis that Europe can draw proper lessons from its difficult history, avoiding the repetition of tragic mistakes of the past," the joint declaration said.

The parties also decided to coordinate their approaches towards solving important international issues "in the interests of forming a fair and democratic world order with the UN's central role and the supremacy of international law," the declaration said.

Gorbachev's beefs with the US [May. 10th, 2008|09:26 pm]

U.S. promises cannot be trusted - Gorbachev

MOSCOW, May 7 (RIA Novosti) - Promises made by U.S. leaders cannot be trusted, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph published on Wednesday.

"The Americans promised that NATO wouldn't move beyond the boundaries of Germany after the Cold War, but now half of central and eastern Europe are members, so what happened to their promises? It shows they cannot be trusted," he said in Paris.

He also said that Washington's claims that a missile defense system it is planning to build in central Europe was aimed exclusively at countering the threat from so-called rogue states could not be believed either.

The Pentagon's missile shield deployment plans continue to be a major bone of contention in relations between the U.S. and Russia. Moscow considers the project a threat to its national security.

Gorbachev said the missile shield plan jeopardized world peace and could lead to a new Cold War.

He continued that that "erecting elements of missile defense is taking the arms race to the next level. It is a very dangerous step".

"I sometimes have a feeling that the United States is going to wage war against the entire world," the former Soviet leader said.

"The United States cannot tolerate anyone acting independently. Every U.S. president has to have a war," he concluded, also saying that the world had squandered the chance in the decade after the Cold War to "build a new world order."

Russia’s second President Vladimir Putin, whose presidency ends on May 7, was included on Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people of the world. It is worthy of note that the magazine has already named Putin Person of the Year in 2007. In addition, Putin was put on the second place in the “Leaders and Revolutionaries” after the Dalai Lama.

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright wrote an article about Putin. After our first meetings, in 1999 and 2000, I described him in my journal as shrewd, confident, hard-working, patriotic, and ingratiating.' In the years since, he has become more confident and – to Westerners – decidedly less ingratiating,” Albright wrote. The illustration to the article shows a well-known portrait of Tsar Peter I with Putin’s head superimposed on the tsar's.

Albright believes that NATO’s expansion towards Russia's borders and the problems of Western countries’ dependence on Russia's crude shipments will remain the bone of contention between Russia and the West. According to Albright, Putin sees his nation as a superpower on the “old-fashioned European arena.”

The list of world's most influential political leaders include such persons as US President George W. Bush (7th place), Chinese leader Hu Jintao (6th), presidents of Bolivia and Chile – Evo Morales and Michelle Bachelet, as well as three US presidential candidates – Barack Obama (3rd), Hillary Clinton (4th) and John McCain (5th).

Editors of Time magazine intended to include Russia's President Elect Dmitry Medvedev on the top 100 list as well. However, they later decided that it was too early to nominate him.

It is worthy of note that USSR’s president Mikhail Gorbachev can also be found in the latest issue of Time. However, he can only be seen on the back cover of the magazine advertising Louis Vuitton bags.

Some Hearts review [May. 2nd, 2008|07:57 pm]

Even if I had written this review before Carnival Ride it still would not be different in how much I love this CD. Carnival Ride doesn't have as much memorable stuff and the songs that aren't memorable are not particularly fun to listen to. Taylor Swift is the new goddess of the country music world, but Some Hearts still comes out on top. Taylor Swift's album has more songs that are better to listen to, but at times, she, even with her great voice and well-done lyrics, seems like nothing compared to Carrie on certain tracks of Some Hearts. Whenever I go to the barn for my horseback riding lesson this CD is my first choice. It is even better listening to on the way back, because driving calmly, no hurry, at night after you've been on a horse, it is usually just so almost, soothing to listen to. This album has two of the most memorable tracks that you could ever hear, and truly remember:  Whenever You Remember, a damn good last dance prom song, and Inside Your Heaven, which she sang on American Idol. There are some songs that don't measure up to the other good songs but they are not bad, thanks in part to Carrie's amazing voice. You'll find some pretty good songs, some that are not quite as good, and two of the best songs ever sung. If Whenever You Remember and Inside Your Heaven are not thought of as at least good, than you are on some very potent stuff.

“When Americans appear near our shores with their navy, the George Washington aircraft carrier, one should not forget that it happens at the time when we together with Brazil are creating the Defense Council of South America,” Chavez said in a speech that was broadcast by all TV and radio channels of Venezuela.

“In this century we will bury the old empire of the USA and will live with the American nation like with a brotherly nation, because over 40 million of its citizens live below the poverty line,” the Venezuelan leader said.

Chavez also said that Latin America entered the new era that was marked with the creation of a bloc of leftist forces – Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Chile and Brazil.

“There are two women standing behind us: Cristina Kirchner in Argentina and Michelle Bachelet in Chile. We have in our bloc a worker from Brazil – Lula – and three revolutionaries – Fidel and Raul in Cuba and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. There is a soldier from Venezuela there too (Hugo Chavez). Now with the victory of a former bishop at the presidential election in Paraguay, we have a priest in our ranks,” Chavez said.

The rhetoric between Chavez and Bush has been hostile. In response to the Bush administrations anti Chavez rhetoric (he has been called a tyrant, populist dictator and drug trafficker), Chavez once referred to U.S. President George W. Bush as a pendejo (asshole), and refers to him as Mister Danger. In a later speech, he made personal remarks regarding Condoleezza Rice, referring to her as a "complete illiterate" when it comes to comprehending Latin America. On September 20, 2006 Chávez called Bush "the devil".

After Hurricane Katrina battered the United States’ Gulf Coast in late 2005, the Chavez administration was the first foreign government to offer aid to the devastated regions. The Bush administration opted to refuse this aid. Later during the winter of 2005, various officials in the Northeastern United States signed an agreement with Venezuela to provide discounted heating oil to low income families.

Such a conclusion was made on the basis of molecular data received after extraction and examination of proteins from dinosaur bones. Previous hypothesis upon their kinship was only based on anatomical similarities.

T. rex is said to share more of its genetic makeup with ostriches and chickens than with living reptiles, like alligators. This involved redrawing of the family tree of major vertebrate groups, placing the dinosaur into different evolutionary relationships.

The study was conducted thanks to a 68 million-year-old T. rex excavated in 2003 by John R. Horner of Montana State University.

Now you can make a conclusion: birds are living dinosaurs.

Soviet military cemetery to be returned to Hungarian city

MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - A Soviet military cemetery in Kiskorpad, that was recently bought in an auction by a private owner, will be returned to the city in a month, an official at the Hungarian embassy in Moscow said Wednesday.

The cemetery, where more than 200 Soviet soldiers killed during fighting against the Nazis in 1945 are buried, was sold due to an administrative error after being incorrectly included in neighboring land deeds.

"Within 30 days the necessary documents will be prepared, and the land will be returned to the local authorities," Laslo Ovary said.

Budapest had earlier assured Moscow that it would stick to the intergovernmental agreement regarding the security of military cemeteries.

Earlier on Wednesday a senior Russian military official, Major General Alexander Kirilin told Hungarian officials that "the cemetery had been maintained in absolutely excellent condition and a new road would be built."

A Russian embassy spokesman, Irina Zvonova said the restoration work at the cemetery has been completed.

In May 2007, the removal of a monument to Soviet soldiers in another ex-Soviet country Estonia led to clashes between protestors and local police, leaving one dead, over 150 injured and more than 1,000 arrested.

The human rights group Amnesty International condemned the situation in Estonia and called on its leadership to respect the rights of ethnic Russians.

Soviet forces liberated Hungary from German forces, which occupied the country, in 1945, the year that WWII in Europe officially ended.

MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) Georgia lost Abkhazia forever/ Azerbaijan holds back completion of Bushehr plant/ Moscow benefits from Beijing's Olympic problems/ Experts discussing possible dangers to Soyuz space crew

Kommersant

Georgia lost Abkhazia forever

President Vladimir Putin's last instructions to the government regarding Abkhazia essentially have to do with irreversibly integrating the self-proclaimed republic into Russia's economic space. After being given a chance to openly use Russian investments, build resort hotels, open branches of Russian banks and receive Russian tourists, Abkhazia will never be part of Georgia again.
Most Georgia politicians realize that they have lost Abkhazia. Former parliament speaker Nino Burdzhanadze certainly knows it, too. She did not resign because her team was not on the election list. The Georgian 'iron lady' never thrashed about, not even when opposition members went on hunger strike in her outer office or when President Mikhail Saakashvili made several important personnel decisions without asking for his faithful aide's opinion. But she clearly does not want to be one of the country's leaders at a time when part of its territory is slipping away and share the responsibility for the national tragedy with Saakashvili.
It is needless to describe the fate that would befall a government at a time when the Georgians realize that Sukhumi has become a different country. People's outrage will lead to a kind of upheaval that the "Rose Revolution" crowds will seem tame by comparison. This, partly, is what the Kremlin counting on while pursuing its policy of Abkhazia's step-by-step integration.
Saakashvili, in turn, knows only too well, what will happen to him personally if he fails to reverse the situation now. He will go politically bankrupt. He will have nothing to show to his own people for his years in office, not even a prospect of an early accession to NATO. With a breakaway Abkhazia, Georgia's accession to the Membership Action Plan any time soon will be out of the question, let alone in December 2008.
As a result, Saakashvili might be forced to step down long before the end of his tenure. That is why he is showing a lot of activity these days, beating the alarm, calling Putin, [George] Bush, requesting an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council under the pretext of some vague spying plane story. But frankly speaking, there is little chance that the international community will be able to talk Moscow into abandoning its current policy.

Azerbaijan holds back completion of Bushehr plant

Russia may fail to complete the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran by September 2008, because Azerbaijan's customs officials have been keeping a Russian truck convoy carrying heat insulation equipment for the plant on the border since March 29.
Azerbaijan claims the cargo lacks a special permit, but analysts view this as Baku's desire to demonstrate loyalty to the United States and strength to Russia.
Natik Akhundov, press secretary of Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee, said yesterday that Atomstroyexport needs a special permit for the transit of equipment across Azerbaijan to Iran.
Atomstroyexport is Russia's nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly, building the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
"The cargo was registered in line with Russian and international customs requirements, and all documents were prepared in advance," said Irina Yesipova, spokesperson of the Russian company.
Experts said the delay might postpone the commissioning of Bushehr's first stage. Initially, Russia pledged to complete construction in 1999.
Atomstroyexport sent the first batch of nuclear fuel to the plant in February 2008 and announced that its trial use would begin in July or August, so that the plant would be ready for commissioning in September.
Natalia Sviridova of the 2K Audit-Business Consulting company said the cargo was detained for purely technical reasons.
"We know how to solve the problem now that Azerbaijani authorities have named the reason," she said. "It will be settled very soon."
But Agvan Mikaelyan, director general of the FinExpertiza audit and consulting group, said there were political reasons behind Azerbaijan's decision to detain the Russian convoy.
"The recent lifting of sanctions from Abkhazia and South Ossetia has clearly alarmed Baku authorities, who have a headache of their own in Nagorny Karabakh," Mikaelyan said. "By detaining a cargo that is politically important to Russia, Baku wanted to show the consequences of a potential change in Russia's stance on Karabakh."
Mikaelyan said Azerbaijan was also showing loyalty to the United States, which is irritated by Iran's nuclear program.

Moscow benefits from Beijing's Olympic problems

A possible boycott of the upcoming Beijing Olympics will not affect Russian interests because Moscow is not involved in the current standoff between the West and China.
Instead of losing, Russia could even benefit from the situation.
China, which is drifting closer to Russia, could make concessions, heed Moscow's interests in such sensitive regions as Central Asia and back down on fuel and energy exports.
Beijing and the West are debating the Tibet issue and human rights. China also has its hands tied on the Taiwan issue. Consequently, Beijing will not think about developing the sparsely populated Siberia and the Russian Far East in the foreseeable future.
Moscow will profit from China's problems in relations with Taiwan, tensions around the Beijing Olympics, unrest in Tibet and separatism in the Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region.
Russian negotiators should keep all this in mind when dealing with their Chinese counterparts.

Experts discussing possible dangers to Soyuz space crew

On Saturday the Soyuz TMA-11 capsule carrying U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson, Russian flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko, and South Korean bioengineer Yi So-yeon from the International Space Station (ISS), made a bumpy re-entry, landing 420 km (260 miles) off target in the steppes of northern Kazakhstan.
On Tuesday evening, a source in the Russian space industry said on condition of anonymity that the descent module had almost become depressurized, and that the crew could have been killed.
An anonymous senior Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) official said there was not yet enough information to find out what had caused the craft to descend along a ballistic trajectory.
He said people always reacted emotionally to all aspects of manned space missions, and that the expert had made a hasty assessment.
"This is a very unpleasant situation because human lives come first. Several descent modules have reentered the atmosphere hatch-down. But it would be pointless to discuss possible risks in the Soyuz TMA-11 case because this would hinder the investigation," the official told the paper.
The number of annual Soyuz launches will increase from two to three or four after all U.S. space shuttles are grounded next year. No more space tourists will fly to the ISS, which will be crewed by six astronauts.
Launch prices negotiated by NASA and Roscosmos could total $2 billion; but they could plunge if the United States becomes convinced that Russian spacecraft are unreliable.
Subtle media maneuvers could greatly affect this issue where much is at stake. The anonymous expert claimed that U.S. space systems were used to locate the ISS crew. But the Roscosmos official disagreed because Russian search-and-rescue teams had located the Soyuz capsule.

Alligator strolls into U.S. kitchen looking for bite to eat

NEW YORK, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - A 69-year-old woman in Florida discovered an eight-foot alligator wandering around her kitchen, local media said on Wednesday.

Sandra Frosti said she heard a noise in her home in Oldsmar, north of Tampa, late Monday night and when she went to check it out she saw the reptile next to the refrigerator.

"All I did was look at it and go, 'Oh my God,'" she explained. "I turned around-did not use the phone in there. I went back into the bedroom, closed the door, and phoned 911," a local Tampa bay news portal cited Frosti as saying.

"There's an alligator in my kitchen!" she told emergency services over the phone.

The operator initially thought she meant an iguana, but when a trapper arrived they indeed saw an eight-foot gator weighing about 230 pounds. The animal had apparently broken through the back porch, and entered through an open sliding glass door.

On entering Frosti's home the gator strolled into the living room, down the hall and into the kitchen.

Local officials believe the animal was after the family cat.

No one inside the house was injured, apart from the alligator who cut itself on a plate in the kitchen but was safely removed.

Carnival Ride review [Apr. 22nd, 2008|05:15 pm]
pros: Carrie Underwood's voice still shines, great ending song

cons: voice talent doesn't comp for the non-memorable songs, too country in some songs

Carrie Underwood has made her way up the ladder from American Idol to Some Hearts, and now Carnival Ride. The song, So Small that is a hit single, is great, but this album does not have as many hits nor the same quality of Some Hearts. This ride is kind of like a one-trick pony because as usual Underwood has an amazing voice but the ok quality of the songs make this ride not for people who haven't listened to Carrie Underwood before. Just as most of the James Bond movies did after "The Spy Who Loved Me", this album's song quality goes somewhat south, but not as much as some of the Bond movies after "The Spy Who Loved Me". A good example of this is Flat on the Floor. Songs like this make you wish you could get off the ride instantly. No matter how hideous these songs may be to some, Underwood's voice still is arguably the best, if not one of the best there is in the business. She even holds her ground against the new godess of the country world, 18-year-old Taylor Swift, but Swift''s voice is still very nice to hear. There are the songs that stick out as truly awesome examples of Carrie's true talent such as So Small, and Just A Dream. Get Out Of This Town, Twisted, and Wheel of the World are really good, but Flat on the Floor is just hideous, and ironically Last Name, her hit single, does not seem like a song she should do. This ride still has Carrie's unstoppable talent, and she does a good job with awesome, ok, and hideous songs. Basically, this Carnival Ride is one of up and downs. After you get off you will not have had the experience you were looking for, but die hard Carrie Underwood fans will have a great time on this ride.

U.S. 'turned blind eye' to torture of Afghan prisoners

11:55|18/ 04/ 2008
Print version

WASHINGTON, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - A U.S. civil rights group said it has obtained documents from the defense department that confirm the U.S. ignored the use of torture by special forces in the interrogation of Afghani prisoners.

A lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union said "These documents make it clear that the military was using unlawful interrogation techniques in Afghanistan. Rather than putting a stop to these systemic abuses, senior officials appear to have turned a blind eye to them."

U.S. Special Forces officers admitted employing special interrogation methods, which included beating, burning and using extreme cold, on eight prisoners at Gardez prison in Afghanistan.

The use of the special interrogation techniques came to light during a criminal investigation into the death in March 2003 of an Afghani prisoner, Jamal Naseer, who died at Gardez in U.S. custody.

The investigation stated that Naseer died of a "stomach ailment," although no post mortem was carried out to confirm the cause of death. There were also a number of statements from witnesses alleging torture and abusive practices, however, the investigation concluded the evidence was "unsupported."

"These documents raise serious questions about the adequacy of the military's investigations into prisoner abuse," Amrit Singh from the ACLU said.

The Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) techniques have been used for decades by the U.S. in military training to prepare American personnel for capture by enemy forces.

Scandals surrounding the United States' treatment of prisoners in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and Afghanistan have drawn widespread condemnation from the international community.

In 2004 photographs of abuse by U.S. military personnel at Abu Ghraib prison, in Iraq, were shown on American television and in papers all over the world.

The images led to a criminal investigation and the conviction and subsequent imprisonment of a number of U.S. personnel, the head of the prison was demoted.

However, U.S. personnel claimed that high-ranking U.S. officials sanctioned the interrogation methods which involved military intelligence, although a Senate panel on Abu Ghraib was told there were no "direct" or written orders authorizing the abuse of prisoners.

Top Russian military officers out of shape [Apr. 18th, 2008|10:11 pm]

Top Military Officers Are Out of Shape

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian generals will soon have a stylish new uniform designed by a top fashion designer but the question is - will they fit?

More than 30 percent of the army's elite officers are overweight and 25 percent failed a fitness test, army spokesman Vyacheslav Sedov told AFP on Wednesday.

The army will now launch a fitness drive as it prepares to move over to a stylish uniform designed by fashion designer Valentin Yudashkin.

"The new military uniform should match what is inside it," said Sedov.

The army will build gyms, swimming pools and sports halls to get the podgy and under exercised officers back in form, said Sedov.

The fitness tests were organised by Vladimir Shamanov, an officer alleged to have overseen widespread human rights abuses while helping to lead Russia's crushing of Chechen rebels.

Officers were tested on their running, swimming and shooting skills.

Shamanov said that the unfit officers need more physical exercises, particularly aerobic exercises, daily newspaper Kommersant reported.

The army will also launch a campaign "to cultivate the culture of sport in the armed forces," said Sedov.

Yemeni court grants divorce to 8-year-old girl

ABU-DHABI, April 16 (RIA Novosti) - A court in Yemen has annulled an arranged marriage between an 8 year-old girl and a man 22 years her senior, the Yemeni Times newspaper said.

Nojoud Muhammed Nasser, who is in the second grade at primary school, filed for divorce from her 30-year-old husband, Faez Ali Thamer in April, stating she was forced into signing a marriage contract by her parents.

"My father beat me and told me that I must marry this man, and if I did not, I would be raped and no law and no sheikh in this country would help me," Nojoud testified in court: "They asked me to sign the marriage contract and remain in my father's house until I was 18. But a week after signing, my father and my mother forced me to go live with him."

"Whenever I wanted to play in the yard he beat me and asked me to go to the bedroom with him," she went on.

Nojoud's ex-husband admitted beating her and having sex, but said: "I have done nothing wrong, as she is my wife and I have the right."

The girl eventually ran away and applied to the court for a divorce petition. The court annulled the marriage instead of simply issuing a divorce to prevent reinstatement claims from Thamer.

"I am happy that I am divorced now. I will be able to go back to school," the girl told journalists after the court case.

Her lawyer said the girl will never return to her parents, and will live with her uncle, who became Nojoud's guardian after her father and husband were arrested.

The case of Nojoud, the first of its kind in Yemen, has sparked controversy around the 1998 amendment to Yemeni law which banned marriage between couples under 15. The amendment permitted parents to conclude marriage contracts between minors as long as the couple does not have sexual relations until they reach 15.

Italian man gets 10 days in jail for staring at woman

ROME, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - An Italian man has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and ordered to pay a 40 euro ($63) fine for staring at a woman on a train, national media reported on Friday.

The 30-year-old man was found guilty of harassment for staring at the woman, 55, on the train from Sondrio to Milan. They encountered each other on two separate occasions in 2005, but never spoke.

According to the woman, the young man sat "too close" to her after asking her to move her coat. During the second encounter, he sat opposite her and stared at her in a way she found "impertinent and inappropriate".

When the woman got off the train, she asked police to find the offender, and filed a lawsuit against him. The man, however, said he was looking at the woman only because she happened to be sitting directly in front of him.

The defendant plans to appeal against the ruling.

Putin pledges support for Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts

NOVO OGARYOVO, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will back the Israeli and Palestinian leaders in their efforts to reach a peace deal, Russia's outgoing president said on Friday.

Vladimir Putin, back in Moscow after visits to Libya and Sardinia, met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the presidential residence. Putin said that Russia welcomed joint peace efforts of Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and "will support them in every possible way."

Russia, a member of the Quartet of Mideast mediators, plans to host a peace conference in June, as a follow-up to last November's U.S.-hosted Middle East peace talks.

Putin first voiced the idea of holding a Mideast peace conference in the Russian capital in 2005, and received the backing of several Arab countries prior to the Annapolis talks.

Abbas said expects major breakthroughs to be reached at the Moscow conference.

"We believe the Moscow conference will be a success, and progress will be made in the Mideast settlement," the Palestinian leader told Putin.

Abbas had said on Thursday that several barriers continue to block the implementation of commitments made in Annapolis.

The Annapolis summit saw a resumption of talks between the Palestinian National Authority and Israel after a seven-year hiatus. The sides pledged to do everything possible to draft a peace settlement by the end of 2008, as well as to come to an agreement on the form of a future independent Palestinian state.

Israel announced a tender earlier on Friday for the construction of 100 houses in Jewish settlements on the West Bank, despite provisions of the roadmap for peace banning settlement activity in Palestinian territories.

Abbas' Fatah party controls the West Bank after being ousted by the hard-line Islamic group Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and some EU states, from the Gaza Strip in a bloody conflict last June.

Scientists imitated the Moon soil scientists took grind mineral anorthosite. This magmetic rock is nothing like fertile soil. In this rock flowers couldn’t survive for a long time. But as soon as certain bacteria were added, the plants revived and started blooming. Bacteria process magmetic rock, providing flowers with necessary minerals like kalium. This is pretty interesting considered that flowers can live in the most difficult conditions. Though the flowers while planted still need atmosphere and water, but the fact that a very essential part –fertile soil – can be omitted, makes the entire process much easier.

Astronauts could create simple hothouse with an easy watering system, add to the grind coat bacteria and seeds, and soon our natural sputnik will be covered with flowers that will bloom for at least one moon hour. The experiment was shown to the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna. The research was shown by Bernard Foing, the senior scientist of European Space Research and Technology Center (ESTEC) that works under the patronage of European Space Agency (ESA).

Foing said that there are no obstacles for this technology to be used on the Moon. Scientists, he added, could start selecting plants most adjusted to living in severe conditions (including space radiation) or could even make its genetically modified species.

Nevertheless, ESA doesn’t make any plans about flowers planting. However, Earth flowers, planted on the Moon, could be as symbolic as flags of different countries that are sticked there. Flowers can be planted with robots’ help long before people will land on the Moon.

A correspondent of the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper asked a question about Putin’s alleged wedding with Alina Kabaeva.

“The first thing that I want to say. There is not even a word of truth in what you said,” Putin responded. At the same time, the outgoing Russian president acknowledged that he liked such a successful and beautiful girl as Alina Kabaeva.

Putin pointed out that every human being, even public or famous figures, have their own private lives, which must not be interfered in, despite the public interest.

“I have always treated badly those who poke their running noses and their erotic fantasies into someone else’s life,” Putin was quoted as saying.

Putin arrived in Italy to have a meeting with Silvio Berlusconi after his visit to Libya.

The rumour about Putin’s divorce and his wedding with Olympic champion and State Duma deputy Alina Kabaeva was started by an article published in the Moskovsky Correspondent newspaper, which belongs to oligarch Alexander Lebedev. The article in the newspaper wrote that a tender for the organization of Putin’s wedding had been announced among Moscow-based event-organizing companies.

The article also said that Putin divorced his wife, Lyudmila Putin, two months ago.

The controversial article in the Moskovsky Correspondent may lead to lamentable consequences for the newspaper.

Alina Kabaeva’s publicist, Elizaveta Ovchinnikova, demanded the newspaper should officially and publicly reject the information. She refused to send an official notice to the newspaper and offered reporters to write the statement themselves. Otherwise, Ovchinnikova added, Kabaeva would sue the newspaper.

The newspaper does not intend to publish the disclaimer. Its editors believe that a rumor, which can not be referred to as a fact, can be rejected only if there is no evidence to prove that the rumour is untrue.
